CA Wildfires Latest: 10K Firefighters Battle, Thousands Evacuated

CALIFORNIA -- More than 10,000 firefighters were battling wildfires across the state Tuesday in another deadly fire season that has so far claimed the lives of eight people. Personnel prepared for another critical day as fire conditions were expected to worsen with temperatures hitting triple digits in many areas of California.

The largest blaze, at 112,000 acres, was the Carr Fire in Shasta and Trinity counties. The fire, which sparked July 23 and was 30 percent contained Tuesday, destroyed more than 1,300 structures and threatened 2,500 more, officials said.

Six people died in the Carr Fire that sparked July 23, including two firefighters. Two other firefighters died in the Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County, which burned 57,000 acres and was 33 percent contained as of Tuesday.

Elsewhere in Northern California, two wildfires erupted in Mendocino County that collectively burned 80,000 acres and forced the evacuation of 10,000 residents. Hundreds of Californians were also evacuated from the Whaleback Fire in Lassen County.

In Southern California, firefighters were gaining containment of the Cranston Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest and the Rock Fire in San Diego County.
