CALIFORNIA — In need of something to celebrate? How about doughnuts?

The first Friday in June marks "National Doughnut Day," a commemorative day that dates to World War I when Salvation Army volunteers, known as "Donut Lassies," traveled overseas and fried and served the sweet treats to soldiers on the front lines.
