How To Prevent Wildfires, Accidents This Memorial Day Weekend
Cal Fire has responded to more than 2K wildfires so far this year. Here's how you can help prevent more from sparking over the long weekend.
CALIFORNIA — Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, and officials are stressing caution after early wildfires have already charred thousands of acres this year. Cal Fire is asking residents to be extra careful during weekend activities, and to take simple steps to prevent wildfires, drownings, and other emergencies.
The department says they had already responded to 2,265 wildfires and over 195,000 other incidents so far in 2021 as of Thursday.
“Approximately 95% of all wildfires in California are caused by human activity, and each year we see disasters that could have been prevented” said Chief Thom Porter, Cal Fire director. “The dry conditions and increased temperatures throughout the state have created a situation where a fire could easily spark, so we ask everyone to be cautious as they enjoy their time outdoors.”

Camping this #MemorialDayWeekend? Make sure campfires are permitted and, if they are, take proper safety precautions! Selecting a level, open location away from heavy fuels such as logs, brush or decaying leaves & needles will help prevent a fire disaster. https://t.co/93p39ZvYEN pic.twitter.com/7uLm97v0E4

Cal Fire asked drivers to ensure their cars were properly maintained without anything dragging on the ground that could spark a fire. Drivers who are towing other items should make sure chains are properly secured, and to never drive over dry grass, which has the potential to start a fire.
People staying at home should ensure spark arresters and similar equipment is in good condition, and avoid doing yard work on hot, dry and windy days. If you're having a backyard BBQ, make sure to never leave the grill unattended.

The department also offered tips for campers to ensure campfires don't grow out of control:
If you plan on going camping:
- Make sure to obtain a campfire permit and check for local fire restrictions.
- If you plan on having a campfire, make sure it is legal to do so. Clear grass, leaves, and other debris within a 10-foot perimeter of the ring.
- Make sure all campfires are completely extinguished before leaving.
- Buy your firewood where you burn it, that way you are not spreading dangerous insects and diseases.
Finally, Cal Fire reminded residents that water drownings typically increase during Memorial Day weekend. Swimmers should never venture into the water alone, and weak swimmers should always wear a life jacket. Children should always wear a life jacket and be supervised by an adult within arm's reach.
"Be particularly cautious of rivers and waterways with rapid currents and never underestimate calm water," Cal Fire said. "Drinking while boating/swimming is just as dangerous as drinking and driving on the roadways."
