Lassen Volcanic National Park: Photos

Have you visited this California treasure? Whether you love snow or sun, start planning a trip for 2021!

CALIFORNIA — California has seven active volcanoes including Lassen Peak, which last erupted between 1914 and 1917, and included explosions, lava flows, and pyroclastic clouds that sent ash raining down on California and Nevada, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The eruption caught the attention of the National Park Service, which made Lassen Volcanic National Park the nation's 15th national park.

A four hour drive north of San Francisco, the park is situated in the Cascade Range. "Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to steaming fumaroles, meadows freckled with wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and numerous volcanoes," the park service says in its description of the park. "Jagged peaks tell the story of its eruptive past while hot water continues to shape the land."

Bay Area resident Jack Liou paid a visit to the park recently and submitted these photos to Patch. He snapped all of the photos from "The beautiful Manzanita Lake Loop Trail sceneries at Lassen Volcanic National Park in wintertime." It's one of the four most popular trails in the park.

Other park activities include boating, fishing, swimming, backpacking, camping, biking, stargazing —including a Dark Sky Festival, and for winter enthusiasts skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.

Lassen also has hydrothermal areas to explore, similar to Yellowstone National Park, minus Old Faithful.

Lodging in the park ranges from camping to a guest ranch, and there are nearby towns that offer hotels.

The other active volcanoes in California are Medicine Lake Volcano, Mount Shasta, Clear Lake Volcanic Field, Long Valley Volcanic Region, Coso Volcanic Field, and Salton Buttes.
