FRESNO, CA — Vice President Mike Pence and his wife arrived in California Saturday afternoon to discuss the Trump administration's foreign policy achievements with service members at the Naval Air Station Lemoore near Fresno.

Pence has reportedly taken on the presidential duties since President Donald Trump largely withdrew from the public eye following the Capitol riot and his subsequent second impeachment.

The vice president's arrival comes as California is on high alert for extremist activity leading up to the inauguration of President-Elect Joe Biden. The California Highway Patrol was placed on tactical alert Saturday morning, and on Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom called up 10,000 California National Guard members to help keep the peace.

Pence, himself, was the target of violent extremists at the Capitol insurrection after Trump riled up his supporters to pressure the vice president to overturn the election. The Secret Service whisked Pence away to safety as hordes broke into the capital, shouting, "Hang Mike Pence."

Pence was scheduled to arrive at Naval Air Station Lemoore around 2 p.m. Saturday.
