Archaeology Day Is Back At Santa Monica Mountains

Learn how to dig like an archaeologist, test out your spear (atlatl) throwing skills, watch flintknapping and more at the 3rd annual event.

AGOURA HILLS, CA – If you've ever been interested in learning to dig like an archaeologist, test out your spear (atlatl) throwing skills, or watch flintknapping, now's your chance. The 3rd annual Archaeology Day will be on Saturday, October 14 at the visitor center for Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The event is sponsored by the National Park Service and California State Parks and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“The Santa Monica Mountains have a long and rich history of human inhabitation by Native Americans, Spanish explorers and colonists, and later Euro-Americans,” Gary Brown, the cultural resource program manager for the recreation area, said in a statement. “This event allows the public to engage with local archaeologists and peek into their work.”

Local archaeologists will also give presentations. The visitor center is located at 26876 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas, CA 91302. For more information, call 805-370-2301.
