City Pays Tribute to Relay for Life Agoura

The volunteer-driven organization is presented with a $20,222.67 check for its cancer fundraising event in April.

Over five years, city staff has raised $80,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year alone, Team Agoura Hills, as the group goes by, put forward $20,222,67 for Relay for Life, the local cancer-fundraising volunteer group.

The Agoura team, which raised $135,000 at its April 24 and 25 event, was presented with the donation at the city council meeting on Wednesday.

"Thank you for the city of Agoura for stepping up," said Relay for Life chairperson and Agoura Hills recreation leader Alyssa Burns, accepting the large purple and white check from Kelly Fisher, the city's public works project manager.

Each councilmember received a Relay for Life t-shirt and the city was awarded with a certificate of achievement.

"Having only 35 employees, we are more of a close-knit group as far as government agencies go," said Fisher. "As such, we took a 'family' vote and decided to participate in this year's Relay, because it is such a large community event, and all of us at the city have been affected by this horrible disease to some degree."

Councilman Dan Kuperberg expressed his gratitude for city employees' efforts.

"We have staff here that does the work that we ask them to do, from 8 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Then in there spare time, they help raise money for such a good cause," said Kuperberg. "Our employees go way above and beyond."
