Transgender Justice to Be Focus of Community Forum
A transgender activist will share her story of growing up with stigma and insults and her later work for social and economic justice.

A transgender activist from India, Kalki Subramaniam, will share her story of growing up with stigma and insults and her subsequent work for the social, economic and political empowerment of transgender and gender non-conforming people at a Community Forum in Newbury Park on Saturday, Aug. 26.
Jennifer Eis of Indivisible: Conejo, a Thousand Oaks-based progressive group that supports women's, immigrants' and LGBTQ+ rights, will speak about local issues and resources at the 7:30 p.m. forum at the Conejo Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Newbury Park.
Subramaniam was one of the major campaigners behind the Indian Supreme Court's 2014 verdict legalizing transgender identity and healthcare in that nation. She founded the Sahadouri Foundation, which has been working for the rights of the transgender community in India since 2007. She is also an artist who, through the foundation, organized the Trans/Hearts project, which has been encouraging transgender people to paint their stories on canvas.
