Alameda High School Students raise $800 for Alta Bates Summit
Local students show support for breast cancer awareness

Student leaders from Alameda High School presented the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Program (CARBHP) a check for $800 this month. Sporting custom designed hoodies sold in conjunction with breast cancer awareness month, this is the second year in a row the school has designated a gift to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Students, faculty and community members have supported local cancer services by raising $1,500 in two years.

“It is so wonderful to see these students involved in service to the community,” radiation oncologist, Linda Gordon, M.D. says. “We serve 100-120 patients each day and diagnose 400 cancer cases each year as part of the Carol Ann Read programs. These students are truly impacting the level of care in our community and we are grateful.”

Sutter Health is also matching donations to CARBHP dollar for dollar this year, doubling the impact of the Alameda High School students’ desire to help improve services in our community.
The diversity club at Alameda High School holds 3-4 fundraisers each year. They select student designers for the merchandise as well. The group was inspired to give to CARBHP because of a teacher at the school who is a breast cancer survivor. She teaches environmental sciences and also taught her students about a biodiverse tree that was the source of one of her own treatments.
