The Alameda Housing Authority is kicking of our annual book drive to benefit low-income children. We will be collecting used and new books for our Esperanza property’s Children of The World Reading Room.
Research shows that learning begins well before a child enters kindergarten. Children, even infants, soak up words, rhymes, songs, and images – important to developing vocabulary, memory, and communication skills.
61% of low-income children have no children’s books at home.

By age 2, low-income children are already behind their peers in listening, counting, and other skills essential to literacy.
The Alameda Housing Authority recognizes its ability to help close the learning gap, and has committed itself to making books more accessible to the 150 children residing in Esperanza – our largest family complex. Residents at Esperanza have the opportunity to assist their preschool and school-aged children in becoming proficient readers. We hope that the Alameda community will support our efforts in this journey toward equitable learning and donate books for our reading room.
