Bicyclist Killed On Fruitvale Avenue ID'd

He died when he crashed into an open car door, was thrown into traffic, and hit by a passing pickup truck.

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — A bicyclist who was killed in Oakland's Fruitvale district on Thursday evening when he hit the open door of a parked car and was ejected into traffic has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 24-year-old Israel Lopez-Garibay of Oakland.

Police said Lopez-Garibay was riding a bike south in the 1800 block of Fruitvale Avenue at about 6:50 p.m. Thursday when he ran into a Toyota Avalon's open door.

Lopez-Garibay was thrown from the bike and was hit by a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup that was headed south on Fruitvale, police said.

Fire and ambulance crews provided treatment but Lopez-Garibay died at the scene.

The occupants of the Toyota and the Dodge pickup stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
