UPDATE: Ching Hua to Close; East End Pizza to Take Over Space

East End Pizza Company is moving to a new space not too far from its Marketplace location. However, that space — currently occupied by Ching Hua — means that the Chinese Restaurant will be closing.

A sign recently posted outside of Ching Hua's window, adjacent to the Marketplace, states the change of ownership going to East End Pizza.

An employee confirmed with Alameda Patch on Wednesday afternoon that the fine dining Chinese restaurant would not be relocating. However, he was unable to provide a reason why or a date on when doors would close for good.

Michele Manousos, co-owner of East End Pizza, said she heard about the restaurant being for sale eight months ago and felt buying it would be a mutual beneficial opportunity because they were good friends with the owner.

"We did not in any way do any hostile takeover," she said.

They had started negotiations three months ago and hope to relocate by early spring.

"We've outgrown our space," Manousos said.

When East End Pizza opened in April 2011, it was primarily planned on being just for takeout. But more and more customers wanted to dine in, Manuosos said.

Aside from gaining a larger space, East End Pizza also plans to expand its menu to include more than just pizza. Manousos said they will remain open until the official move.

Alameda Patch could not reach Ching Hua's owner for further comment.
