City Hall Planning for 'Marriage Equality Wedding Day'

The City of Alameda is getting ready to provide wedding ceremonies to all couples wishing to get married at City Hall.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling to partially overturn the federal ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ restores equal rights, democracy, and humanity for same-sex couples who wish to marry,” said Mayor Marie Gilmore. "It’s too bad that this ruling only applies in the states that provide for same-sex marriage."

The State of California expects to give the green light, in approximately one month, for same-sex marriages to be legal.

As soon as the State declares the effective date, the City Clerk’s office will schedule and announce a special ‘Marriage Equality Wedding Day’ and conduct as many same-sex weddings as possible on that special day.

Interested couples can place their names on the waiting list by contacting the City Clerk’s office at 510-747-4800. Couples getting married will need to have a marriage license (which can be issued by any county) and valid photo IDs.

Community members and organizations will also hold a celebration rally at City Hall on Alameda’s special ‘Marriage Equality Wedding Day’.
