COVID: Oakland Coliseum May Become Mass Vaccination Site

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — The Oakland Coliseum may become a COVID-19 mass vaccination site, similar to the one that's set to open at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles by Friday.

The Oakland Athletics and public health officials are in discussions over how that drive-thru vaccination site would work, a spokesperson for the team, Catherine Aker, confirmed Monday.

The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority is expected to vote on establishing the vaccination site during its meeting Friday morning.

Also in the works are vaccination sites at Petco Park in San Diego and Cal Expo in Sacramento, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday.

"These large, mass-vaccination sites, you'll start to see those coming up as early as this week," he said.

Some 2.4 million vaccine doses have been shipped to the state's counties, local health jurisdictions, and health care systems as of Sunday, Newsom said.

To date, just 783,476 — less than one third —of those doses have been administered, leaving 1.6 million doses sitting in freezers.
