Family Resource Center Celebrates Grand Opening

Located at 350 Brush St., the center will offer the community plenty of services such as different forms of counseling, housing support, and much more.

Dozens of city officials, political leaders, and community members helped celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new Alameda Family Resource Center on Friday afternoon.

Located at 350 Brush St., the building — equipped with two exam rooms and two counseling rooms — is used as a school-based health center for students during part of the day. Then, on certain days after school, the center is used to serve all members of the community.

From educational advocacy and housing support to parenting counseling and food stamp assistance, the center will offer a wide variety of services to its clients.

Irene Kudarauskas, Executive Director of Alameda Family Services, said the center has been in the works for more than a year and was funded through Measure A and the county's Beahvioral Health Care Services.

It was created mainly for folks on the west end of Alameda who had no access to transportation to get to the Alameda Family Services' main office on Clement Street, according to Kudarauskas.

"We're trying to reduce any barriers [for people] to use our services," Kudarauskas said.

Dan Goldfield, a teacher at both Island High School and Alameda Adult School, stopped by the pick up informational materials on the services to share with all his students.

"Sometimes students are a little shy [to ask for this information], so we try to direct them," Goldfield said.

All are welcome to use the center's services. No appointment is needed. For more information, call (510)612-7807.

December hours are as follows: Wednesdays and Thursdays, 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center will be closed from Dec. 24 to January 1, 2013.
