Oakland Flights Impacted By Suicidal Man

OAKLAND, CA — Terminal 1 at Oakland International Airport has reopened after a sheriff's sergeant wrestled a knife away from a suicidal man.

The man suffered a superficial wound to his neck, according to the sheriff's office.

"The airport has reopened and the subject is en route to the hospital for psychiatric help," the sheriff's office said in a tweet. "We are proud that our deputies were able to safely resolve this incident using de-escalation and a great deal of patience."

The sheriff's office reported at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday that a man with a knife was threatening to harm himself, forcing the partial evacuation of Terminal 1.

Passengers and planes were routed through terminal 2 for scheduled flights. Hawaiian, Alaska, Delta and Frontier airlines were all impacted.

Crisis negotiators spent hours talking with the man in a effort to get him to surrender. It was finally resolved around 10 a.m.
