PG&E was working on pinpointing the exact location of a gas leak in Alameda that prompted police to warn residents to shelter in place Monday afternoon, police and PG&E officials said.

Police said the shelter-in-place order in the area around the 1400 block of Mound Street, a residential area on the eastern end of the city, was issued at 2:53 p.m. and called off at about 3:30 p.m.

PG&E responded after receiving reports of the leak at about 2 p.m. and is working on drilling holes in the ground to vent the gas from the underground leak and will then pinpoint the exact location of the leak and make repairs, PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said.

The leak was believed to have been coming from either a 3-inch plastic main or a half-inch service line, Sarkissian said. Repairs were expected to be completed Monday night..
