Protecting Pedestrians In Alameda: City Takes Action

ALAMEDA, CA — In early November, it was reported that seven children had been hit by cars while walking to or from school already this school year. The resulting public outcry brought increased enforcement from the police department and action from the City of Alameda.

The city has made or is making the following short-term safety improvements:

• Refresh faded crosswalks with new, bright, yellow thermoplastic ladder striping for the full intersection
• Improve visibility at selected intersections by restricting parking near the corners
• Remove and replace stop sign on the pavement further away from the crosswalk and add a new advance stop bar
• Remove and replace faded signs
• Put out a Request for Proposals for a Citywide Speed Survey to better understand existing speeds throughout town and determine if high collision segments can legally be reduced
