The late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born Jan. 15, 1929, and his birthday is celebrated as a national holiday on the third Monday in January, which this year is Jan. 21.

Alameda City Hall: Closed.

Alameda City Public Library and all branches: Closed.

Garbage, green waste and recycling service: Curbside collection of recycling, green waste and garbage will occur as normally scheduled.

Department of Motor Vehicles and other state of California offices, federal offices: Closed.

Banks: Most banks – including Citibank, Chase and Mechanics – will be closed. 

Stores, businesses: Varies, though many will be open.
