3 sessions of Bay Area Shakespeare Camp to be held at St Alban’s

First time in Albany for this fun and enriching program! Everything included for ages 7-13 and 12-18 to get into the act.

We're pleased to announce that 3 sessions of the wildly popular Bay Area Shakespeare Camp will take place in Albany for the first time ever this summer! They'll be held at St. Alban’s, 1501 Washington Avenue – just about a mile away from Berkeley’s John Hinkel Park, where camps have previously been held.

Sessions for ages 7-13 take place June 17-28 and Aug 5-16. A third session for ages 12-18 is also scheduled Aug 5-16. Camps meets weekdays from 9am-3pm, with optional aftercare until 5:30. Shakespeare Players (ages 7-13) will perform in their own abridged version of one of Shakespeare's classic comedies: As You Like It, The Tempest, or Playing the Fool (a collection of scenes featuring clowns, jesters, and comic figures from Shakespeare's plays). Upstart Crows (ages 12-18) will perform The Taming of the Shrew.
Experience is welcome but not required to get into the act and have fun with your friends at Shakespeare Camp!

Professional theatre artists lead campers in a series of daily activities and exercises that provide training in:

  • Shakespeare's rich language
  • acting and improvisation
  • voice and movement techniques
  • stage combat
  • set and costume design, and more!

Utilizing a proven curriculum that's been developed and refined over the past 27 years, Shakespeare campers learn how to understand Shakespeare and 'speak the speech' while gaining an appreciation for the wit and plot structure of the plays. On the final day, campers use their newly developed abilities in a performance presented to family and friends. All are invited to attend the post-show celebratory cast party as well.

Studies have shown that theatre education has the additional benefits of developing self-confidence (off-stage as well as on), inspiring creative thinking, enhancing concentration and problem solving capacities, and improving communication skills. Additionally, Shakespeare campers have fun in a supportive environment that encourages each camper to challenge them self and move onto the next rung of the performance ladder, no matter what background they bring to the camp.
