Oakland Man Fatally Struck by Train at Ashby BART Identified

Officials say death appears to be a suicide.

The man who died Monday underneath a train at the Ashby BART station in Berkeley has been identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau. Patrick New, 39, of Oakland was killed in a collision with a BART train reported at 12:24 p.m.

The fatality appears to have been a suicide, according to BART spokesman Jim Allison. Two independent witnesses said they saw the man intentionally jump in front of a train. Footage from video surveillance apparently confirms what the witnesses said, Allison said. There was no evidence of foul play, he said.

The death prompted the closure of the Ashby station and the turning around of trains at neighboring stations for more than two hours while BART police, the Berkeley Fire Department, and the coroner’s bureau responded.
