What's Open & Closed on Columbus Day in Albany

Monday, Oct. 14, is the official federal Columbus Day holiday, but except for Saint Mary's College High School and the Post Office, most institutions in Albany will operate as usual. Albany's public schools, city offices and library are open.

Oct. 12 is the traditional Columbus Day, but the official Columbus Day federal holiday falls on the second Monday of October, which this year is Monday, Oct. 14.

Here's what's open and closed in Albany and on Monday:

Open:

  • Albany public schools
  • City of Albany offices
  • Albany Public Library
  • Most businesses
Closed: 
  • Saint Mary's College High School
  • U.S. Post Office
Other:
  • BART – regular Monday schedule if there's no strike
  • County of Alameda offices – open
  • Alameda County Superior Court – closed
  • State offices – open
  • Federal offices not already closed by government partial shutdown – closed
Columbus Day commemorates the Oct. 12th in 1492 that Christopher Columbus reached North America and thought he had arrived in China, according to History.com.
