Kids in Tow, Couple Builds Business From Scratch

Salon Platinum celebrates 15 years in Aliso Viejo.

They met at the Mission Viejo mall in 1985. He was a hairdresser. She worked in retail.

Trying to survive in Orange County, husband and wife duo Jeff and Diane Wacker looked for an inexpensive location to start their own salon. With two children in tow they opened on Nov. 19, 1996.

“We bought most everything from the do-it-yourself store and did it ourselves,” Diane said.

When the salon opened, Diane was studying interior design. The empty canvas of their new business became great experience for her. With a shoestring budget, Diane and Jeff created a space with Andy Warhol style.

Every business decision was made as a team, but their roles in the salon were very different. Diane was the “do-it-all” girl tackling daily tasks as the receptionist, accountant, retail/inventory tracker, marketing specialist, website designer and custodian.

Jeff stayed behind the chair, frequently going through training to learn the latest techniques and hair trends. He currently works with Alterna Haircare and travels around the United States and abroad teaching other stylists.

“We compliment one another with our strong suits keeping a good balance in our business partnership,” Diane said. “I apprenticed under Jeff for hair for a short time attaining my apprenticeship license, but decided that actually doing hair was not my forte.”

Today Diane spends a lot of time building interest in Salon Platinum through social media with daily, sometimes hourly updates to Facebook and Twitter.

After a few expansions to the business Salon Platinum grew to include skincare services and a full service medical spa. The salon also includes its own photo studio where stylists can take pictures of their hair creations for their own websites and portfolios.

Salon Platinum is celebrating their 15th anniversary this year with a variety of events and specials to thank their clients. Complimentary drinks and snacks are offered on Celebration Saturdays. Gifts and prizes surrounding the “15” theme are also provided, including:

  • Father’s day $15 haircuts
  • For current clients, 15 minute Complimentary Conditioning Treatment (with Jeff Wacker only)

Diane said they enjoy giving back to their community whether it is through customer appreciation nights or charity fundraisers.

Beginning with their own children running around the salon, Jeff and Diane now look forward to seeing their granddaughter, who frequents the location.

“We do try to keep it relaxed and family friendly to an extent. Since day one we supported our young stylists, some single moms, starting out their families and juggling their careers with the ability to bring in their children into our break room/lounge area when needed while they worked,” Diane said. “Our thoughts on it are, we don't mind your children as long as you do.”

That being said, Diane warns that the salon is not child proof as a variety of sharp and hot tools are in constant use.
