New AVCA Board Elected; Commitment of Member Questioned

Last-minute nominee Erik Sund is elected assistant treasurer of the Aliso Viejo Community Association.

Thirty-one delegates gathered in City Hall council chambers Monday evening, electing three board of director members.

The newly elected AVCA Board of Directors:

  • President – Bill Conley
  • Vice President – Jim Martin
  • Treasurer – Ray De Leon
  • Secretary – Lisa Naegele
  • Assistant Treasurer – Erik Sund

Erik Sund, a former AVCA president and board member, was nominated during the annual meeting by one of the delegates, making him the seventh candidate hoping to fill three open seats among the AVCA board. Sund said he hadn’t planned on running this year, but received a lot of support from his community as the election drew near. Sund’s decision to run came after the deadline for candidacy, making a floor nomination his only chance for election.

Sund said he feels he served the community well during his previous term on the AVCA board from 2007-09 and remains true to his platform of “fairness, objectivity” and his mission to keep a balanced budget and high property values.

Speaking as a delegate, current AVCA board member Jim Martin spoke during the meeting expressing his concern for Sund's nomination. During Sund’s pervious term, Martin said he missed many, if not all, of the Master Architectural Committee meetings, which Sund served as liaison for the board.

“Given your previous attendance with the AVCA board and with the MAC and Parks and Landscape committee, do you think you have the time to commit to this board?” Martin asked during the meeting.

Sund responded saying he is ready for the commitment and wouldn’t have accepted the candidacy if he wasn’t.

Ross Chun, the outgoing AVCA president, said in his six years as an AVCA board member he has never seen a floor nomination.
