This Mother’s Day Choose a Gift that Empowers Moms in Haiti

Aliso Viejo-based Liberate Clothing will launch their online jewelry store on Sunday. Pre-sales have already begun.

Jackie King and Melanie Hunley, both Aliso Viejo residents, have been working on a clothing line, to be sold in the United States, that will provide jobs to women in the impoverished nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

While their Liberate clothing line will begin online sales in August, their jewelry store is scheduled to launch on Sunday—Mother’s Day. A parent in Haiti handcrafts each piece of jewelry, using “materials like recycled paper to make beads and ceramics designed together to create a perfect ambiance,” King said.

She hopes people will give a gift that not only honors their own mother, but supports the mother and jewelry artisan in Haiti.

“We chose to launch Liberate on Mother's Day because we thought what better day to encourage people to celebrate their mother's by also blessing a mom that is struggling to survive to take care of her family,” King said. “Each artisan that makes this jewelry is choosing to stand up and not choose poverty for their families. They are using their gifts and talents to feed, house and provide opportunities for themselves and families.”

King said dozens of jewelry pieces have already been pre-sold. The 35 different variations of jewelry, which range in price from $6 to $70 per piece, will all be available during the website’s Mother’s Day premiere.

“This Mother's Day we want to encourage people to give a gift that shows your love while giving a gift of opportunity,” King said.
