16 Killed in Car Accidents During Holiday Weekend in L.A. County

CHP officers made 336 drunk-driving arrests during the Fourth of July weekend.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Sixteen people were killed in traffic crashes in Los Angeles County over the 102-hour July 4 holiday period, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

Statewide, 56 traffic-related fatalities were reported between 6 p.m. Wednesday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, according to the CHP.

CHP officers also made 336 drunken-driving arrests in Los Angeles County during that period, and 1,559 DUI arrests across the state.

The July 4 holiday period in 2012 encompassed only 30 hours, according to CHP Officer Vince Ramirez.

According to data released by Avoid the 100 Los Angeles County DUI Campaign, nearly 700 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the four-day holiday weekend in Los Angeles County.
