Man Dies In Fatal 4 Vehicle Crash In Baldwin Park

A passenger who exited a disabled vehicle was struck and killed on the 10 Freeway in a four-car collision, CHP says.

BALDWIN PARK, CA —A person was struck and killed during a four-vehicle collision on the eastbound 10 Freeway (San Bernardino freeway) through Baldwin Park on Friday morning. Three of the lanes were blocked during the crash cleanup and investigation, according to authorities.

Officers and emergency vehicles responded to the scene at 3 a.m., on the freeway at the Francisquito Avenue exit, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was driving eastbound on I-10 west of Francisquito Avenue when he collided with a 2016 Volkswagen Passat, CHP officer Esparza said in a release.

Sometime after the collision, the 25-year-old passenger of the Monte Carlo exited the vehicle and standing directly in front of the disabled vehicle on the freeway.

An 18-year-old 2013 Toyota Prius driver was traveling on the eastbound 10 in the #2 lane and "did not see the victim" until it was too late. The Prius driver was "not able to stop or slow down," first striking the victim, and then collided with a 1995 Toyota Camry, CHP said.

The 25-year-old Norwalk resident suffered fatal injuries. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

The Prius driver was taken by ambulance to the Queen of the Valley hospital, and no other injuries were suffered in this four-car crash.

All lanes of the freeway were closed for about an hour. The carpool and No. 1 lanes of the freeway reopened about 4 a.m., and the other lanes reopened about three hours afterward, the CHP reported. Alcohol or drugs was not suspected in this collision. No arrests were made.
