Man Sentenced to 80 Years to Life for Sexually Abusing Children

An El Monte man convicted of child sex abuse charges involving a girl and a boy was sentenced Tuesday to 80 years to life in state prison.

Roberto Edgar Torres, 33, was convicted May 8 of two counts each of unlawful sexual intercourse or sodomy with a child 10 or under and unlawful oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child 10 or under, along with one count each of committing a lewd act on a child under 14 and harmful matter sent with the intent of seducing a minor.

The crimes occurred between January 1997 and March 2009. The girl was 7 years old at the time, and the boy -- now an adult -- was 7 or 8 years old, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Torres fled during the investigation by the Pomona Police Department and was arrested in September 2011 in Tamaulipas, Mexico. He was extradited to Los Angeles County in March 2012 to be prosecuted on the charges, which were filed in May 2009.

The defendant was sentenced by Pomona Superior Court Judge Bruce Marrs.
