Woman Arrested After Allegedly Stabbing Boyfriend in Azusa

A 19-year-old woman stabbed her boyfriend today in Azusa, and both were arrested after the incident, police said.

The stabbing was reported at 7:30 a.m. in the 500 block of East Eighth Street, Sgt. Andy Sutcliffe of the Azusa Police Department said.

Dispatchers were told the suspect had stabbed her boyfriend and was leaving the scene in a white Honda Accord, Sutcliffe said.

"Responding officers stopped the Honda a short distance away and found Valerie Ortega riding in the back seat with blood stained clothes and shoes,'' Sutcliffe said. ``She also carried a folding knife in her pants pocket.''

Ortega was detained and another group of officers went to an apartment complex on Eighth Street looking for the stabbing victim, Sutcliffe said.

"When officers arrived a bleeding 19-year-old male fled from the front door of his apartment and led officers on a short foot pursuit before being detained,'' Sutcliffe said.

Ortega was arrested and booked at the Azusa police jail for assault with a deadly weapon. She later posted the $30,000 bail and was released.

The stabbing victim was treated for a minor stab wound to his chest and a serious wound to his left hand, Sutcliffe said. After being released from the hospital, the stabbed man was booked at the jail for an outstanding domestic violence warrant.

"Officers believe the reason he ran from officers was to avoid being arrested for the warrant,'' Sutcliffe said.

The unidentified man was being held on $30,000 bail.
