Beaumont Man Jailed In High-Speed Banning Chase
Banning police say the man was spotted driving the wrong direction on a major roadway before the chase.

BANNING, CA β A Beaumont man was jailed Monday on suspicion of DUI and evading arrest after authorities say he led them on a high-speed chase over the weekend.
It all started around 1:18 p.m. Saturday when a Banning police officer, who was parked in a patrol vehicle in the 5900 block of west Ramsey Street to monitor traffic, spotted someone in a gray Kia sedan driving in the wrong direction, according to police.
The person in the Forte, later identified as 29-year-old De-Yon Hayes, was going eastbound in the westbound lanes of traffic, police said.

"The Banning Police Officer immediately caught up with the vehicle and activated his emergency lights and siren," police said in a news release. "The driver failed to stop and a vehicle pursuit was initiated."
The nine-mile pursuit entered Interstate 10, and lasted approximately six minutes, police said. It eventually ended at I-10 eastbound truck scale.

Hayes was taken into custody and booked into the Banning jail on suspicion of felony evading, public intoxication and DUI, records show. His bail was set at $25,000 and he's currently scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
