
Update 5:10 p.m.Β The California Highway Patrol has released more details aboutΒ a crash Friday morning on eastbound Interstate 10 near State Route 62, in which a 7-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries.
The crash occurred just after 7:10 a.m. Jan. 17 whenΒ a 2001 Chevrolet minivan towing an enclosedΒ trailer was eastbound on theΒ 10, approaching the transition road to the 62, CHPΒ Officer Stephanie Hamilton said in a statement.
"There were a total of five occupants in the vehicle, a 66 year old male from Nevada, a 31 yearΒ old female from Anaheim, an 11 year old girl, a 9 year old boy and a 7 year old boy, all fromΒ Anaheim," Hamilton said.
For unknown reasons, the trailer being towed by the Chevrolet began moving side-to-side, and the trailer overturned, Hamilton said.
"The driver of the Chevrolet tried to maintain control of the minivan but it subsequently overturned," Hamilton said.Β "The Chevrolet and trailer continued in a northeasterly direction of E/B I-10, where it cameΒ
to rest partially blocking the #1 and #2 lanes."
The 7-year-old boy was partially ejected, and he wasΒ transported by ambulance toΒ Desert Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, Hamilton said.
The 9-year-old boy andΒ 11-year-old girlΒ sustained minor injuries andΒ they were transported to Desert RegionalΒ for treatment, Hamilton said.Β The two adult occupants did not sustain any injuries.
"The cause of this collision is still under investigation," Hamilton said. "The investigating officer related that it appeared the juvenileΒ occupants were not wearing their seatbelts."

An overturned vehicle was reported at 7:12 a.m. Jan. 17, according to the CHP.
Two Cal FireΒ engine companiesΒ responded "to a traffic collision with extrication on Eastbound I 10 near Hwy 62 in North Palm Springs,"Β Jody Hagemann of Cal Fire-Riverside County said in a statement.
The child later died at a hospital and a coroner's investigator was summoned, according to the CHP. Three other people sustained minor injuries, Hagemann said.
Two eastbound lanes on the 10Β remained closed east of SR 62 as of 11:55 a.m. Friday, a Highway Patrol dispatcher said in a phone interview.
