LAKE ELSINORE, CA β€” The California Highway Patrol has joined a collaborative effort with nearby states of Arizona and Nevada to help ensure the safety of all road users as they travel this Labor Day weekend. All three states' officers will be on the lookout for a three-day Maximum Enforcement Period beginning at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, and continuing through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4.

Labor Day weekend marks the traditional end of summer celebrations. Many families gear up for holiday gatherings and road trips, often across state lines. The CHP, Nevada Highway Patrol, and Arizona Department of Public Safety officers will work in concert to ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely, especially given the surge in traffic that typically accompanies holiday weekends, according to a recent news release.

Though law enforcement will seek out traffic violators and assist motorists during the weekend, special emphasis will be placed on identifying and apprehending those suspected of driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs and alcohol, according to CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee.

"Alcohol-and drug-impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of traffic fatalities and injuries. An impaired driver behind the wheel puts themselves and everyone on the road in great danger," Duryee said. "The CHP, along with our partners in Nevada and Arizona, are committed to proactive enforcement throughout the holiday weekend. We will deploy all available personnel to ensure the highest level of safety for everyone traveling."

In 2022, during the Labor Day enforcement period, CHP officers made more than 900 arrests for DUI and issued nearly 5,700 speeding citations. Sadly, 52 people were killed in crashes on California's roads.
