Double Fatal Crash Reported In Idyllwild

IDYLLWILD, CA — Two Winchester people were killed in a weekend motorcycle crash near the Riverside County mountain community of Idyllwild, officials reported Monday. The crash happened Sunday around 1:35 p.m. on State Route 243.

Riverside County coroner's officials say that 56-year-old Larry Scott and 54-year-old Robin Scott both died at the scene of the wreck.

Larry Scott was driving a black Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on SR-243, approaching Marian View Drive, when he crossed the double yellow lines into the southbound side of the roadway, according to CHP Officer Darren Meyer. This happened as an Idyllwild man in a Ford F-150 truck was nearing.

"The Harley Davidson struck the left side of the Ford, causing both occupants of the Harley Davidson to be ejected," Meyer said. "The driver and passenger of the Harley Davidson sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision and were pronounced deceased on scene."

It's not clear what prompted the motorcyclist to cross into opposing traffic.

Meyer said that both the man and women were not wearing the appropriate type of helmets.

"During the on-scene investigation, it was determined that both riders of the Harley Davidson were wearing non-Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmets," Meyer said. "The CHP would like to remind motorcycle riders that DOT approved helmets are required by law and can greatly decrease the chances of injury resulting from a collision."

The highway was closed for more than an hour in both directions following the crash as the CHP investigated.
