Man Fires On Deputies, Holes Up Near Morongo: Sheriff's Dept.

BANNING, CA β€” A man suspected of firing on Riverside County Sheriff's Department deputies over the weekend in an unincorporated area of Banning remained jailed Monday.

Michael Duran, 52, was booked into Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to jail records. No bail has been set for him.

According to the sheriff's department, deputies were called to the area of Chino and Ramon roads at 5:17 p.m. Sunday to investigate reports of gunfire.

When the deputies got on scene, the suspect fled and a chase began.

The pursuit ended in the area of 12100 Morongo Road in unincorporated Banning with the suspect shooting at deputies and barricading himself inside a home, according to the sheriff's department.

Other police agencies rushed to assist, and the sheriff's department brought in multiple armored rescue vehicles.

The suspect, later identified as Duran, would not surrender, so law enforcement set up a perimeter around the home he was holed up in. Nearby residents were evacuated for safety.

A robot was ultimately used to locate Duran inside the home, and he finally gave up, the sheriff's department reported.

The sheriff's department confirmed that Duran is not a tribal member.

No deputies were injured during the incident.
