The single-engine Piper PA-28 crashed while the pilot was trying to land at Big Bear City Airport around 1:25 p.m., according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The plane caught fire after crashing; two people were on board, according to the FAA. The victims' identities were not released and updates on their condition were not provided.

As of Wednesday morning, the tail number of the aircraft was not available. The number provides additional information about the plane via the FAA registry, including the registered owner.
"The FAA will release the tail number of the aircraft after investigators verify it at the accident site," the agency said.
