Victim ID'd In RivCo Fatal Hit-And-Run, Suspect Arrested In Hemet

The Riverside County Coroner's office identified the 31-year-old bicyclist struck and killed while standing in a San Jacinto center median.

HEMET, CA β€” A 21-year-old Hemet man suspected in a hit-and-run collision that left a bicyclist dead in San Jacinto was in custody Monday.

The victim, Margarito Castro, 31 of San Jacinto, died at the scene, Riverside County Coroner's Office announced Tuesday.

Deputies from the San Jacinto Sheriff's Station responded at 8:21 p.m. Sunday to a report of a major injury hit-and-run collision at the intersection of State Street and Dillon Avenue where they found a man lying in the roadway, said Sgt. Dawn Blair of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Witnesses told deputies Castro was standing in the center median on State Street with his bicycle when a white Hyundai entered the center median traveling southbound at a high rate of speed. The Hyundai struck the victim and the driver continued southbound on State Street without stopping, Blair said.

Castro was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner's report.

Another witness gave deputies the license plate of the Hyundai and deputies traced the suspect and the car to a Hemet address, Blair said.

Savaughn Jojuan Colon Barnes was arrested in the 1900 block of Acacia Avenue in Hemet and booked at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. Bail was set at $100,000, Blair said.

It is unknown if alcohol and or drugs were a factor in the collision. Anyone with information about this collision was asked to call the San Jacinto Sheriff's Station at 951-654-2702 or dispatch at 951-776-1099.
