Former San Diego City Engineer to Take Over as Belmont Public Works Director

Afshin Oskoui will begin his tenure in Belmont on July 18.

Beginning this month, Belmont’s Public Works Department will be under the guidance of a new director, as former San Diego City Engineer Afshin Oskoui will assume the position on July 18.

“I’m looking to add to what’s a great team in Belmont, and bring in my experience and expertise in order to add value to the team that’s already in Belmont,” Oskoui said.

“I’m excited to get into a smaller city and bring in my touch with community involvement and working with the community to improve the quality of life,” he said.

Oskoui, who has worked in engineering and construction planning and design for 25 years, said his main focus upon arrival at his newfound post will be to engage the Belmont community regarding what improvements it seeks in the near future.

“I hope to come in and hit the ground running,” Oskoui said. “Obviously, part of my job it’s going to be getting into the organization, talking to staff, talking to management, getting involved with the community and listen to what are the major hot topics for the community.”

“I believe in putting the ‘public’ in ‘public works,’ and making the community part of the infrastructure of the services we provide,” he added.

Oskoui, who obtained his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from San Diego State University, served the past three and a half years as City Engineer in San Diego, and prior to filling that position, he served 13 years as Deputy City Engineer.

Oskoui also has experience at several other division head positions, having dealt with issues concerning public facilities, transportation, contracting, and parks and recreation facilities, among others.

“I know Belmont is active with neighborhood groups, so the city has a strong voice and a strong view on how services should be delivered,” Oskoui said. “So I believe that I can come in and hopefully be a catalyst for that forward-moving progress with the city.”
