Citizens Group Launches Full Scale Assault Against Belmont Tax Measure
The Belmont City Council has placed a 30 year, ½ percent sales tax increase on this November’s ballot—called Measure I—supposedly for infrastructure needs such as roads and storm drain repair.
We agree that some of our infrastructure needs repair. But from our very thorough analysis of costs and city revenue, we believe the City will have more than enough money for infrastructure needs without going to the people for increased taxes — see our detailed analysis at StopMeasureI.com.
Furthermore, the impartial ballot analysis of the measure states:
“Because this Measure does not legally restrict the use of tax revenue to any specific purpose, it is classified as a ‘general tax,’ not a ‘special tax.’ The tax proceeds may be used for any valid municipal governmental purpose.”
So, the current City Council, and any future Council can spend this new tax money in any manner they wish—pensions, salaries or virtually anything—for the next 30 years!
Residents with a broad range of backgrounds, including four former mayors, are united in actively opposing tax Measure I. For more information, please visit our website at StopMeasureI.com
