Second Mountain Lion Sighting Reported in San Mateo County

A mountain lion sighting was reported for a second time this week, San Mateo County​ Sheriff's Department officials said.

San Mateo County -- A mountain lion sighting was reported for a second time this week, San Mateo County Sheriff's Department officials said.

The mountain lion was reportedly seen near the 3100 Block of Portola Road in Woodside around 1:45 a.m.

The resident apparently saw the animal using a thermal imaging camera when it was approaching a gated area and then leaving into a nearby rural area.

A deputy responded to the location and conducted an area check, however, the animal was not located.

Officials are urging the public to use caution until the mountain lion is found. Here are some tips:

  • Do not approach the lion if you see it, especially one that is feeding or with offspring
  • Avoid hiking or jogging through wooded areas when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, or at night
  • Keep a close watch on small children when hiking or traveling in or about wooded areas
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children
  • Keep all pets and pet food indoor at night. Even the largest domesticated dogs and cats can be prey to a mountain lion
