Street Rehabilitation Under Way Near City Hall
The Sixth and O'Neill Avenue Street Rehabilitation Project is kicking off this week and will span over the next five months.
Beginning this week, the reconstruction of Sixth and O'Neill avenues will kick off, and the project is set to take about 100 working days, according to Belmont city engineer Bozhena Palatnik.
The rehabilitation will incorporate a number of repairs, including drainage improvements on curbs and gutters, landscaping, and improvements with street lights.Â
"They're going to start with potholing, and sidewalk and road excavation, just preparing the street for actual reconstruction," said Palatnik. "That's the first phase."

Pavex, the contracting company, will work on Sixth Avenue between O'Neill and north of Waltermire, and on O'Neill Avenue between Sunnyslope and Alleyway, between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
"The second phase, they're going to be doing underground storm-draining, putting in all the pipes, preparing for the future road," Palatnik said. "It's going to be slightly modified to accommodate a new sidewalk, a new curb and new gutters."

The city of Belmont would prefer to have the project finished by September, alleviating congestion on Ralston Avenue near El Camino during the beginning of the school year, but it looks as if the rehabilitation will bleed into the beginning of the fall school months.Â
"It's roughly five months, but hopefully it's going to be less than that," Palatnik said. "We would like to get the actual street done before school starts because there's more traffic."
