
John Sangmeister, the owner of Gladstone's restaurant in Long Beach, will attempt a world speed record when his 72-foot sailboat departs Pt. Fermin today in the annual Transpac Yacht Race to Honolulu.
Sangmeister. The boat will be racing in the Transpacific Yacht Race, a 2,255 nautical mile journey from Los Angeles to Honolulu. John is out to break the crossing record of the Transpac, which is currently 5 days, 9 hours, set in 1997. John is hoping to do the race in less than 5 days and his boat is capable of reaching speeds of 37 knots. The start of the race for this class is Saturday, July 13.
