It's a Boy: He Already Swims and Loves His Mother

He's the first male harbor seal born at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Watch the moments after his birth with older Mom Shelby, and find out how you might be the one who names him.

In the days to come, the youngest harbor seal at the Aquarium of the Pacific will be out of public view, learning with his mother Shelby, sister Bixby and his caretakers how to fend for himself among adult seals.

But for an hour, the first male pup born at the downtown Long Bech aquarium was ogled and photographed by the media to help promote public sponsorship of the aquatic life at the Aquarium. And those who donate to Adopt a Pet earn the right for their submitted name to be posted in public view.

"The Aquarium of the Pacific staff is celebrating the birth of the first male harbor seal at the institution, which was born on May 1, 2013," the Aquarium annoounced. "The public has the chance to help name the pup through the Aquarium’s Adopt an Animal program by adopting a seal at the $25 level or higher before June 30, 2013. The pup will remain behind the scenes with his mother until he is ready to be moved to his home in the Seal & Sea Lion Habitat."
