LBPD Enforces DUI Patrol

LBPD officers hope Saturday's patrol will deter drivers from taking the road while impaired.

The Long Beach Police Department will be initiating a citywide DUI saturation patrol targeting drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol on Saturday, December 31, 2011, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m the following morning.

LBPD hopes to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol and drug related accidents and DUI saturation patrols are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the streets, as well as educate the public on the dangers driving while impaired, according to an LBPD press release.

In the United States, impaired driving caused by alcohol or drugs causes one death every 30 minutes, and one injury every two minutes. The average American has a 30% chance of being killed or injured by an impaired driver, and saturation patrols have been proven to reduce impaired driving-related collisions by removing these drivers from our streets, reads the press release.
