Let's Make Masks for the Next Dark Harbor Audition!

Caprice Rothe and Sharon Moore are the dynamic duo known as About Face, a Mask Making team. Let's make latex masks and audition in them!

It was in June 2015 that I happened upon the Dark Harbor auditions. It was at that audition (I went as an observer... I like to put myself into places and scenes) I realized the family that is the cast of Dark Harbor.

I don't recall all the names, except that there was one gal who knew a friend of mine. We hooked up on Facebook afterwards. It's a family. There's even a doctor who participates. It put a different perspective on the scene when I went that October to check out the new mazes and to scream. Well, I don't always go to scream... I just do when loud things clang behind me and scary made up folks jump out at me... standing just a tad too close for comfort. Hey bud, don't you know about personal space?

As we prepare for the Makersville fall schedule, I'm thinking about Sharon and Caprice's latex mask making class. Students will sculpt their mask in clay, cover it with a thin layer of plaster, blowing gently with a straw to ensure that the holes are filled. Then they will cover that layer with plaster and cloth. When it's dry, they will extract the clay, and fill the mold with latex. Then it dries again. Remove the latex mask, paint and wear.

It sounds easy, but it's quite a process. We're very lucky to have the latex mask making class.

One year, a lucky group of kids made molds of their faces. I forget what the process is called (face casting?). It was awesome, but we never repeated the exercise... You have to take the opportunity when it comes...
