Barricaded Man Allegedly Stole 4 Bottles of OJ

A man who allegedly displayed a gun inside a as he stole four bottles of orange juice was in custody Monday night after police chased into a neighborhood and found him about three hours later.

The suspect was not immediately named by Police Sgt. Aaron Eaton, who said the man was in his 20s, and "there was a handgun found in the area."

At 3:20 p.m. Monday, an employee called 9-1-1 to report a man with a gun was or had been in the store, Eaton said. He said the suspect reportedly stole four bottles of orange juice and walked out the door of the stores, on Atlantic Avenue between South and Market streets.

The man walked out of the store, a security guard began approaching him, "pointed his handgun at the security guard," Eaton said, and the guard backed off as the suspect ran East.

Officers arrived at 3:22 p.m. and saw the man running away, and chased him but lost sight of him. Traffic was diverted away from the area as officers searched for the man.

At some point, police learn that the man may be hiding behind or under a trailer in someone's backyard, and the SWAT team was called. At 6:50 p.m. the man was taken into custody without anyone being harmed, Eaton said.

Why the man used a gun, a felony, to steal less than $5 in OJ from the discount store--an otherwise likely petty theft--was not known.
