Long Beach Unified Makes National AP Honor Roll

The state's third-largest school district is named among the country's top 500 districts who have increased numbers of students passing Advanced Placement tests (5% up over prior year).

The Long Beach Unified School District, California's third-largest, has been honored with placement among the top 500 districts in the U.S. on an advanced placement (AP) honor roll, it was announced Tuesday.

"We're delighted to be recognized by the College Board for giving
more students the chance to succeed in college prep courses," said Chris Eftychiou, spokesman for the LBUSD. "If you're a student who's willing to work hard, our high schools have the classes for you.

"If you're a parent worried about the looming cost of college for your child, then this national honor should be music to your ears," Eftychiou added. "These college-credit AP courses can save you thousands of dollars in tuition."

Long Beach Unified's district's spokesman further stated:

As part of its Academic and Career Success Initiative, LBUSD has made a concerted effort in recent years to boost participation in Advanced Placement college prep courses. Last year, 5,062 students took one or more AP courses here, nearly double the number in 2003.  Over the same period, students of all ethnicities saw significant increases in AP course enrollment.  Meanwhile pass rates have now increased to 55 percent on AP exams, up 5 percent over the prior year.

"Parents especially appreciate AP courses because their children can earn college credit while still in high school, saving thousands of dollars in tuition.  Many of our students earn an entire year of college credit before leaving high school."
