Strong Winds and High Surf Hitting the Coast

It's flying palm frond weather, Long Beach. So for today's whipping wind, prepare to dodge the aireborne fronds, especially along Ocean Boulevard, and don't forget to secure loose umbrellas and outdoor objects.

Much of the Southern California coast will see very strong, gale force winds that could reach 80 mph, with possible gusts in the L.A. mountains of 100 mph.

Winds will be strong enough to down power lines, trees and large tree limbs and will cause dangerous cross winds on the road for high-profile vehicles. 

High surf is also forecast. For surfers intending to head to nearby beaches for wave riding: Wave sets could reach 11 feet along west and northwest facing beaches and a high surf advisory is in effect until Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The high surf will cause some rip currents, and swimmers and surfers should use caution. Most breaks will see waves in the 7-9 foot range, with a maximum of 11 feet, according to NWS. The advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday. Some beach erosion is likely during high tide. 

The temperature today in Long Beach will reach 70 degrees and the weather will be clear, with temps Tuesday forecast for 10 degrees higher in the city and elsewhere in Southern California.
