Community Corner

Sudden Community

Responding to the City of Long Beach's Call for PPE.

In 2015 Makersville received a large donation of fabric through its relationship with the Boy Scouts of America, as it was at that time known.

We did many things with that fabric, but most recently, i.e. since Coronavirus started, we have been sewing masks. We started a sewist community called Fashion Masques, put up a website, an ETSY Store, experimented with mask making styles and asked our friends and family to purchase our masks. We opened a kiosk at Shoreline Village and started sewing at the beach. How awesome is that?

The City of Long Beach has made a public call for PPE, which includes masks.

Makersville is responding to this call with free mask making demonstrations so that the community can help to respond to the city's needs and, in fact, solve the problem themselves. It's best if you have a sewing machine, but we will start with hand-sewing techniques first.

Those who want to participate in our Fashion Masques sewist community after that, will be welcome to join us. If you already know how to sew (with a machine) and want to join our sewist community, let me know!

How you can help:

We are gathering 100% cotton. Please connect with me if you have a stash.

We are teaching. Do you want to present a class?

Do you have a working, unused sewing machine? Donate it.

Here is my best mask ever. IMHO.

We are being tapped for fabrication services. When you have learned and are ready, join our community of sewists.

Here is my vision to save the US Economy. There's no shame in having been impacted by this Coronavirus. Let's work our way out of it together.

IF you just want to buy a mask, the best way is to support our kickstarter. These orders will be aggregated and will enable us to part out the work to our sewists (orders coming in one at a time are generally fulfilled by just one or two folks, because it's too hard to look for someone to do it..

This is an inclusive Makersville project and heavily leverages a donation that was made to our program through the Long Beach BSA in 2015.

I invite you to help us in our entrepreneurship learning journey, and to read about and hopefully avail yourself of what is "The Best Mask Ever, IMHO". I have five masks now, and it is still my favorite. This mask is especially good for glasses wearers and those who need to wear their mask for more than 10 minutes at a time.

And in the event that you find yourself in need of a mask, Here is our Kickstarter.

Snug Fitting Masks for Longer Wear Times and No/Low Fogging

Fashion Masques is seeking orders from small businesses with T-Shirts and other swag that they might want to turn into masks. We provide bulk rate pricing that is fair to our sewists and are developing a new model for distributed order fulfillment. To connect with us, visit us at http://www.fashionmasques.com or email us at sales@fashionmasques.com.

Need your mask now? Visit our ETSY FashionMasques store for your custom mask. Select the Email me option of fabric for additional choices.

Never one to stop at the current thought, I am visualizing a summer entrepreneurship contest with a 1 month business development theme. It's a reality show with focus on reality. Hm... if you would like to support buildout of this vision, please connect with me through info@makersville.net. It may have to wait for 2021, but then again, it might not.
