The Long Beach PD activity reported by a reader was part of a planned multi-agency vessel check involving the department's Port of Long Beach officers, LBPD's spokeswoman Cynthia Arrona said. It was called: "Maritime Chokepoint Operation led by LASD, which took place this past Saturday at both the Port of LB & Port of LA Harbor Districts. LB Port Police Division routinely collaborates with law enforcement partners to conduct recreational vessel boardings, at the direction and supervision of the United States Coast Guard (USCG), checking for federally mandated safety equipment (such as personal flotation devices & fire extinguishers)."  Â
