Benicia Customers Asked To Be Aware Of Water Use As State Cuts City's Preliminary Water Allocation

The California Department of Water Resources cut the City of Benicia's preliminary water allocation from 15 percent to 5 percent.

BENICIA, CA — As California heads toward a predicted drought this summer, the City of Benicia learned this week that the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) cut the City of Benicia’s preliminary water allocation from 15% to 5%. The last time this happened was in 2014 (another drought year).

“This will be a difficult, but manageable water year,” said Kyle Ochenduszko, Deputy Public Works Director. “Staff is still analyzing the impact of DWR’s most recent allocation, but all customers are encouraged to be very water conscientious this summer.”

The City of Benicia relies heavily on water supplies from the State Water Project, managed by DWR. Reducing water demands this year enables the City to more efficiently manage water resources in case next year is also a dry year. More information will be available to customers soon, but the City of Benicia is sharing water conservation tips customers can use today:

Check your sprinkler system for leaks:

  • Inspect your sprinkler system monthly and repair any leaks. Adjust your sprinkler heads to prevent water draining off your lawn and down the gutter.
